The Detroit Tigers on Monday placed catcher Wilson Ramos on the 10-day injured list for the second time this month due to a lumbar strain in his back.

Detroit also activated left-hander Derek Holland (shoulder) off the IL.

Ramos, a two-time All-Star, was activated off the IL on May 17 and went 2-for-23 in six games.

After Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals, Ramos informed the team that his back was ailing again.

“He looked a little uncomfortable. He said things weren’t right, he didn’t feel good and it had been bothering him a little bit,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. “He didn’t look as healthy as he looked earlier in the season. We had a long talk about what was best for him and what was best for us.”

Ramos spent the minimum 10 days on the IL the first time. Hinch said the Tigers would be more cautious this time.

The 33-year-old Ramos is batting .200 with six homers and 13 RBIs in 35 games in his first season with the Tigers.

Holland last pitched for Detroit on May 1.

The 34-year-old is 0-1 with a 13.00 ERA in eight appearances (one start). He has allowed 13 runs and 16 hits with nine strikeouts over nine innings.

After Sunday’s game, Detroit also optioned JaCoby Jones to Triple-A Toledo and recalled fellow outfielder Victor Reyes from the same affiliate.

Jones, 29, was batting just .170 with two homers and nine RBIs in 36 games. The 26-year-old Reyes struggled with Detroit earlier in the season when he batted just .143 with one homer and three RBIs in 21 games.

The Tigers open up a four-game home series against the Cleveland Indians on Monday.
