Where to get a great lobster roll in Portland, Maine
Everyone knows Maine is a great place to get a lobster or a lobster roll, but where should you go in Portland, ME, to get an excellent lobster roll?
This is not a listicle
This is not a listicle. I will not compare and contrast these great-tasting lobster rolls and tell you one is better than the others. That would be like me telling you to get Rolls-Royce instead of a Bugatti.
However, I will tell you where to get a few, and you can stop by there when you’re in Portland, ME, get it the way you like it, and you can decide for yourself.
Eventide Oyster Co.
Everyone thinks you can only make lobster rolls one way, and that’s on a toasted hot dog roll with lots of melted butter. Who says you have to have butter running down your chin and hands to your elbows to have a great lobster roll? Well, OK, that does sound great, but…
The Eventide is a small seafood restaurant with a raw oyster bar and cocktails. Locals know this place stays packed because of the oysters, beer, and lobster rolls. They are famous for their steamed brown butter buns with chives stuffed with sweet lobster meat.
They’re on the small side, so you’ll want two if you’re not getting other food, but a bowl of lobster stew or New England Clam Chowder with a Maine craft beer will make it a meal that will fill even a big appetite.
Open from 11 am to 10 pm every day.

Bite into Maine
Actually, it is a stationary food truck in Cape Elizabeth close to Portland Lighthead and two other locations. One is the Allagash Brewing Company, and the other is a brick & mortar location at Scarborough.
Bite into Maine serves three different styles of lobster rolls:
- A traditional Maine lobster roll with mayo and chives
- Picnic-style with Coleslaw in the bun and lobster meat on top
- Connecticut-style with just lobster meat and butter.
“Eating a lobster roll at this food truck located next to a lighthouse might be the single most Maine thing you can do.” — anonymous reviewer.
Open from 11 am to 4 pm Thursday & Friday, and from 11 am to 6 pm on Saturday & Sunday.

The Highroller Lobster Co.
What makes the Highroller lobster roll so intriguing is that they have several choices of mayo. I tried the lime mayo, and it was awesome. My friend asked for the Buffalo mayo — who knew that was even a thing. It was great. We got the kids lobster grilled cheese, and they loved those.
Open from 11 am to 11 pm Monday through Saturday and from 11 am to 9 pm on Sunday.
