Rangers pitcher Kohei Arihara to undergo shoulder surgery, will be sidelined for months

Texas Rangers pitcher Kohei Arihara needs shoulder surgery and will be sidelined for at least 12 weeks, manager Chris Young said Saturday.

According to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Young told reporters that Arihara has an aneurysm in his pitching shoulder. Dr. Gregory Pearl, a vascular surgeon, will repair Arihara's posterior circumflex humeral artery on Thursday in Dallas.

Arihara has been on the 10-day injured list since May 9. He signed a two-year, $6.2 million contract with the Rangers after spending six seasons with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan's Pacific League.

The 28-year-old is 2-3 this season with a 6.59 ERA, 1.535 WHIP and 17 strikeouts in 28.2 innings.

Left-hander Hyeon-Jong Yang has taken Arihara's place in the rotation. Texas is fourth in the AL West with a 21-27 record.
