Tampa man, 26, killed in fiery crash on I-275 near Gandy Blvd.
PINELLAS PARK — A 26-year-old Tampa man died Tuesday night after he drove his pickup truck into a car he was passing on Interstate 275 near Gandy Boulevard, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The pickup was moving at a high speed, headed south on I-275 when it hit the rear of a southbound car driven by a 25-year-old St. Petersburg man. The vehicles left the roadway and entered the shoulder, where the car came to rest while the pickup struck a light pole and a tree then caught fire, the Highway Patrol said.
The pickup driver died at the scene. A 22-year-old Tampa man riding with him received serious injuries. The driver of the car received minor injuries.
The Highway Patrol did not release the names of those involved in the collision because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records law.
