LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - The mayor of Las Cruces has honored the police officer responsible for taking down the man who killed a New Mexico State Police officer on Interstate 10 near Deming in February.

At the Las Cruces City Council meeting on Monday afternoon, Mayor Ken Miyagishima presented Officer Adrian De La Garza with a Distinguished Service Award for his "bravery, valor and selfless service" to the community.

Drone video obtained by ABC-7 of the incident showed De La Garza taking a bullet from drug trafficker Omar Felix Cueva before returning fire, striking and killing the suspect.

Authorities said Cueva had already shot and killed NMSP Officer Darian Jarrott during a traffic stop near Deming.
