MARK SCHWARZER: Kasper Schmeichel is at the peak of his powers following his world class display to help Leicester win their first ever FA Cup... he can stay at the top for many more years

  • At 34, Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has many years left at the top
  • His saves from Chilwell and Mount were world class and helped win the FA Cup
  • It was pure reactions to stop Chilwell's header going in via the post late on
  • He's not old for a goalkeeper, either – Kasper is at the peak of his powers

At 34, Kasper Schmeichel has many years left at the top. His saves from Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount were world class and helped Leicester win the FA Cup.

Chilwell’s header was so close to the goal Schmeichel wouldn’t have got an indication which direction the ball was going to travel.

The second save from Mount was a combination of excellent reaction, athletic agility and a strong hand. It was equally impressive.

Sometimes you see goalkeepers take a little hop to set themselves before diving and those precious wasted milliseconds can be the difference to reaching the ball and not quite getting there.

Kasper didn’t hop, he once again reacted and dived in one motion and that allowed him to get to the ball incredibly quickly. It was a strong palm as well but, if he hadn’t set off instantaneously, he wouldn’t have arrived in the first place.

He’s not old for a goalkeeper. Gianluigi Buffon is 43, that is old. Kasper is at the peak of his power. Everything is set for today’s players to continue for longer than previous generations — all the information on diet, nutrition and physiology is available and Kasper has embraced that.

Losing the final is a big blow for Chelsea, particularly as it’s come off the back of a Premier League loss at home to Arsenal. Thomas Tuchel brought the new manager but, as often happens, initial momentum can be followed by setbacks. Chelsea are getting a little dip at the wrong time of the season.

Against Arsenal, they lost because they didn’t take their chances. More worryingly, yesterday’s defeat was due to the team dropping off in all aspects. They didn’t create a lot of chances until the end when Schmeichel made his saves.

Chelsea never had control of midfield where Youri Tielemans ran the show. Timo Werner scared the living daylights out of Leicester early on because Jonny Evans clearly wasn’t fit. Once Evans was substituted, Leicester had more control.

They were precise in their play whereas Chelsea tried to force things and suffered from a lack of movement.

For Tuesday’s game against Leicester, Champions League final spots will be up for grabs for Tuchel’s players as they look to bounce back.

The blessing for Chelsea is their dressing room has plenty of experience with players such as Cesar Azpilicueta, N’Golo Kante, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger. Tuchel has also had to come through setbacks at big clubs before. There is no time for them to sit back and feel sorry for themselves.

They have to get down to business right away with the next big game so soon and the biggest of them all, the Champions League final against Manchester City, a fortnight away.

I’m sure it’s been difficult for Chelsea’s players trying to learn about a new manager when there are so many games you can’t have proper training sessions to build a rhythm.

Their big characters will need to make their voices heard to stop a bad week spoiling the end of the season.
