Joe's Seafood and Prime Steak - Chicago, IL Restaurant Review
Joe's Seafood and Prime Steak did not start out in Chicago. It was actually known as Joe's Stone Crabs when it was founded in Miami, Florida by owner Joe Weiss in 1913. They are world-renowned for their famous Stone Crab Claws.
In 1999, Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises became involved and opened a branch in Chicago, followed by the 2005 opening in Las Vegas, NV. These branches are known as "Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab" to set them apart from the 4th generation owned Miami original. Since opening in 1999 in Chicago they have become a Chicago landmark.
I had always driven or walked by this restaurant and constantly had it on my mind to eat here one day. I had heard that their famous Stone Crab Claws were to die for. The opportunity presented itself as it was my wife's birthday and we both love seafood and steak, so we finally gave the place a try.
I walked into the restaurant and the vibe was an old-school steak house. It had a large wood bar, white linen tablecloths, and waiters dressed in tuxedos, ready to accommodate for a beautiful dining experience.
I had made my reservation a week in advance and it was definitely a good idea to not just walk in. The restaurant was extremely busy and even with our reservation, we had to wait 15 min to be seated.
We were led to our table and seated in given time to look over the menu.
We knew that we were going to order the Stone Crab claws as an appetizer. We ordered 5 claws for around $90 dollars. They are not cheap, just as a heads up, but I already knew it was going to be a pricey meal.
The claws arrived at our table and they were pre-cracked in order to save us the trouble. They also came with Joe’s signature mustard dipping sauce.
They were chilled, not hot, and were delicious. The meat came right off the claw, which was perfect.
For our main dishes, my wife ordered a filet and I ordered a filet Oscar style. Oscar-style came with lump crab meat and asparagus in a Bernaise sauce. We ordered macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes as sides to share. Everything was delicious.
As for dessert, we ordered a piece of banana cream pie and a piece of peanut butter pie. Joe’s is not only famous for their claws, but also for their desserts. Each pie was excellent.
This restaurant is definitely a must-try great place for a special occasion
It is very pricey, so plan to spend some money, but it is definitely worth the price.
I give Joe's Seafood and Prime Steak a rating of 9 out of 10 and will definitely be back for a special occasion.
