Today Forbes released their annual list of the highest-paid athletes in the world. Dallas Cowboys fans won't be surprised that star quarterback Dak Prescott was the highest-paid athlete in the United States in 2020.

Despite the world being engulfed by the COVID-19 pandemic for much of 2020 and sporting tournaments being canceled or being played in front of empty stadiums, the world's top athletes still earned huge salaries.

The ten highest-paid athletes in the world took home earned $1.05 billion over the past 12 months, an increase of 28% over last year’s top ten.

Let's take a look at the Dallas athlete that was the highest-paid sportsperson in the United States over the last 12 months.

The Dallas Cowboy Star

Forbes has the Dallas Cowboys quarterback earning $107.5 million over the Iast twelve months. Of this, $97.5 million was his on-field earnings, while $10 million was for off-field endorsements and deals.

In March, after months of speculation, the Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott agreed to a four-year, $160 million contract, of which $126 million is guaranteed.

Prescott's signing bonus was the highest in NFL history at $66 million. He will earn a record $75 million in the first year of the deal. The astronomical signing bonus was the catalyst that pushed Prescott into the rare $100 million club- and the only American.

The other three to earn over $100 million are Irish UFC fighter Conor McGregor, number one with $180 million, Argentinian soccer player Leo Messi with $130 million, and Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo with $120 million.

Lebron James was 5th in the world, earning $97.5 million.

Off Field Endorsements

Prescott has several endorsements that boosted his earnings. Currently, it includes Sleep Number, DirecTV, and 7/11. He has also announced a 20% stake in Walk-On’s locations in Arlington, Las Colinas, The Colony, and Waco. He plans to invest in up to 15 more locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area over the next few years.

When I had the opportunity and it came and was presented to me to be able to invest in such a great company, it was a no-brainer with everything aligned and the values being the same and being able to bring my home cooking to the Fort Worth-Dallas area.”Dak Prescott

Return from injury

The thing that makes the record signing even more remarkable is the serious injury that Prescott is coming back from. Dallas fans will recall the gruesome compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle on October 11 in the game against the New York Giants. This ended his season, and there was speculation over how this could affect his contract going into free agency.

Since that day, Prescott has done significant ankle and leg rehab and is confident of coming back better than ever.

“I’m close to being exactly where I wanna be. I could go play in a game right now and be very successful.” Dak Prescott
