Mother in Newport Virginia Charged With Murder After Infant Stabbed to Death
This horrific incident in Newport, Virginia has shocked the nation.
On Monday, around 9:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Hilltop Drive, officers got a call for a female in distress and located two children with multiple stab wounds. Police provided first aid but the infant died at the scene while the other child, who is only eight years old, is in the hospital in stable, but critical condition.
The mother, 35-year-old Sarah Whitney Ganoe, was arrested and charged with one count each of second-degree murder and malicious wounding, as well as two counts of felony child neglect.
Wavy spoke to Newport Chief of Police, Steve Drew, who said, “Any loss of life is difficult, but it’s especially challenging when it involves innocent children, I cannot be more impressed with the professionalism and compassion demonstrated by Newport News police personnel, starting with the dispatchers who took the call to the officers, detectives and forensic technicians who handled and processed a horrific crime scene."
Police confirmed that officers have previously been called to the residence for domestic and disorderly issues, a confession that is horrific and begs the question, could this have been prevented had the proper authorities been called and if child protective services had intervened earlier. This tragedy brings to mind the horrific death of Gabriel Fernandez and how these child deaths should always be preventable.
Thus far, no other information has been released to news sources about this tragic crime other than how "horrific" the scene was and that the husband of the infant came home, only to be intervened by police. The father of the eight-year-old lives in another state, according to Newport Police.
