Skate DSM to Host Skateboarding Clinics at New Lauridsen Skatepark

Do you have a young skateboarder or a child interested in learning more about the hobby? If so, be sure to check out the upcoming youth skateboarding clinics to be held in Des Moines, Iowa at the new Lauridsen Skatepark.

Young skateboarders of all levels will have the opportunity to participate in upcoming youth skateboarding clinics in the Des Moines metro hosted by Skate DSM.

A special guest at the upcoming clinics will be Mike Vallely, legendary skateboarder, singer, business owner, recurring character in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game series.

Interested families can sign their children up for each clinic individually or for all four to receive a beginner, progressive teaching program based on your skill level.

Details about the different skill level lessons are below.

  • Beginner Skill Level - Beginner skaters will have an opportunity to learn the basics of skateboarding and safety from skilled, local skaters. All participants are welcome regardless of skill level, although skaters should have experience standing and rolling on a skateboard. Skaters will be grouped by skill level and paired with the appropriate instructor. Average level of experience: 0-2 Years. Skills learned include basic maneuver skills including balance, pushing, stopping and turning.
  • Intermediate Skill Level - Intermediate skaters will have an opportunity to improve their skateboarding skills by learning from skilled, local skaters. All participants are welcome regardless of skill level, although skaters should have experience standing and rolling on a skateboard. Skaters will be grouped by skill level and paired with the appropriate instructor. Average level of experience: 2+ Years. Skills include Ollie, pop shuv-it, flow, and grind.

Registration Information:

Some events have been selling out quickly, so registering in advance is advised and strongly recommended. If classes have not reached their limited capacity, skaters may have the option to register on the day of the clinic beginning at 8:30am. Those interested can register online here.

All skaters, whether you register in advance or on the day of the class will be required to complete a registration form, and sign a liability and covid-19 waiver. Additionally, all skaters are asked to sign a standard photo and video release form allowing Skate DSM to use photos and video taken at the clinic for promotional purposes. A parent’s signature will be required on the waiver for any registrant under 18. Parents must be present at the clinic for any registrant under age 12.

COVID-19 and Safety Precautions
Helmets and facemasks are required for all participants in these clinics. Skate DSM is following CDC and industry guidelines to protect all skaters, coaches, and spectators. Skaters should plan on:

  • Wearing a mask – Face masks are mandatory for anyone attending the event over the age of two.
  • Daily health assessments – All skaters are required to complete a COVID-19 liability waiver and health assessment before participating in the clinic.
  • Socially distancing
  • Keeping clean – We will have sanitizing stations at the clinic.
