Why is Monroe so dangerous, and what is being done to curb the high crime rate?
The disturbing crime statistics.
The crime statistics do not make for good reading for Monroe residents.
In Monroe, there are 17.91 violent crimes per 1000 residents. Compare this to the Loisana average, which is 5.49 violent crimes per 1000 residents, and the United States average, which is 4. There is a 1 in 56 chance that you will be a victim of a violent crime if you live in Monroe.
In 2020 there were 22 homicides, an increase over the previous two years. This included a shooting at the Delta Mini Mart on DeSiard Street on Christmas Day in which two people tragically died.
Looking at "lesser" crimes and the statistics still paint a bad picture.
Monroe has 67.15 property crimes per 1000 residents. Louisana cities average 31.62 while the United States average is 28. There is a 1 in 15 chance of being a victim of a property crime.

Will the new Chief of Police make a difference?
All of this is very negative information, so what is being done by the city of Monroe to reverse this?
Last July Friday, Ellis became the 34th Mayor of Monroe when he won 52% of the votes in the mayor election. Mayor Friday Ellis appointed Victor “Vic” Zordan on Oct. 16 as the Monroe Chief of Police to help curb crime. Zordan, 50, is well known in Monroe, having served the last 20 years in the Monroe area. He worked briefly in the Monroe Police Department but for the last 24 years has been a federal agent with U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
“We believe that Vic Zordan is the right person to lead our police department into the next era of growth and progress for our city. His background, as a highly regarded federal agent working in gun and drug enforcement, will help us address the immediate problems facing our community,” Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis
Zordan does have a plan to try and stop the increase in crime.
“I’m a firm believer that guns and drugs go hand in hand, and we need to dismantle those organizations from the top down. So I’m going to put more emphasis on that and backing them and supporting them so we can get the entire organizations off the street” Victor Zordan Monroe Chief of Police
In addition, Monroe Police are implementing a citizens academy via neighborhood watch programs that would allow community members to provide police officers with information directly.
Zordan, Ellis, and the entire city of Monroe certainly have a big job ahead of them. Let's hope they can reduce the crime rate in Monroe and make the city safer for all residents.
