FC Cincinnati announced the signing Friday of veteran goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer from the MLS waiver list.

The 35-year-old Netherlands native was signed to a guaranteed contract through 2022 and will occupy an international roster spot.

“We are always looking for opportunities to improve our roster and believe Kenneth brings quality and leadership to our team,” general manager Gerard Nijkamp said in a news release. “He has experienced success throughout his career and we feel this is a good addition to our roster. We are happy to have Kenneth in Cincinnati and look forward to him integrating within our team quickly.”

Vermeer made 15 starts across all competitions for Los Angeles FC in 2020. He was 2-3-3 with 20 saves and one shutout in eight starts during the MLS regular season.

Vermeer has made 323 career appearances (320 starts) as a professional, posting 99 shutouts in 16 seasons with AFC Ajax (2005-14), Willem II (2007-08), Feyenoord (2014-20), Club Brugge (2018) and LAFC.

In a corresponding move, Cincinnati cleared room on the 2021 roster by placing defender Maikel van der Werff on the injured list.

Cincinnati plays next on May 16 at Inter Miami CF.
