Seattle Mariners claim Jack Mayfield off waivers

The Seattle Mariners claimed infielder Jack Mayfield off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday and also transferred infielder Shed Long Jr. to the 60-day injured list.

Mayfield, 30, was added to the 40-man roster and optioned to the alternate training site.

He was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in two games with the Angels this season. He batted .170 with two homers and eight RBIs in 47 games with the Houston Astros from 2019-20, and has made starts at second base, third base and shortstop.

Long, 25, began on the season on the 10-day injured list. He had surgery in September to repair a stress fracture in his right shin.

Long batted .223 with eight homers and 24 RBIs in 76 games with the Mariners over the 2019 and 2020 campaigns.
