No one ever talks about these places when we ask people in Spokane where is a good place to eat.

Yet, when my wife and I moved from Portland, Oregon three years ago, we were surprised about how few places there were to eat that had reasonably priced food that tasted great. The other thing we noticed was how much chain restaurants seem to rule the culinary landscape of Spokane if you don't go downtown.

It was very disappointing for us after being in a place where every mom-and-pop, whole-in-the-wall place had great food. It didn't even matter what kind it was, there would be a place to help you appreciate every type of food from all-American hamburgers to Indian cuisine.

Finally, as we started to branch out and go to places that seemed to be sitting unnoticed we found a few gems.

These places, while they might seem like the last place you would go for good food have surprised us with taste, price, and a down-to-earth feel that has really kept us coming back for more.

El Charrito

Located on Regal on the South Hill is a little drive-thru Mexican restaurant that has really taken us back to street tacos from a food truck in Portland, Oregon. While we haven't eaten much else at the place, we can tell you that every type of taco there is well worth your time.

My kids love it, my wife loves it, and I will stop in there any chance I get to pick up a few tacos for cheap. This is definitely one of the best places on the South Hill to get good, cheap tacos.

Palouse Bar and Grill

Here is one that might surprise you. Or maybe not. The Palouse Bar and Grill located off of Regal in the Target parking lot has continually surprised me with meal options. While every day, lunch, and dinner is fairly basic American food, what has been one of my favorite things there is their breakfast/brunch menu.

Yes, there are a lot of better, more traditional brunch places I could probably go around Spokane, but this place shocked me with how great the food is from the breakfast menu. This is a place I look forward to going back to for breakfast time and again.

Ferrante's

Here is a place that has captured my heart. It might be because of the pizza. Or maybe the gelato. Either way, it is a simple place to come in, get gelato, pizza, or some other Italian fare and enjoy your time with your family. Ferrante's was surprising to me because it is tucked away again off of Regal in the same strip mall area as Ace Hardware.

While it seems so unassuming on the outside, the pizza, wine, and gelato have kept us coming back for more. While the gelato isn't cheap, the rest of the menu is reasonable and it is so nice to be able to grab something to eat and sit out on their patio during the summer with my family.

Final Thoughts

Now, we have been here for three years and we have tried a lot of different places on the South Hill to eat. These three places just seem to surprise me with being places that I want to come back to time and again. Sure, there might be some places that are staples on the hill, but these strip mall restaurants keep me coming back for more.

While these places are great, it would be amazing to see what other places on the South Hill should be considered. I will almost bet there are places I have driven by and never noticed that would be so good to eat at.
