The Atlanta Braves activated Drew Smyly from the 10-day injured list Saturday, and the left-hander was expected to start immediately against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
To make room on the active roster, infielder Sean Kazmar Jr. was optioned to the Braves’ alternate site. Outfielder Cristian Pache also was reinstated from the injured list and sent to the alternate site.
Smyly, 31, was placed on the IL on April 16, retroactive to April 13, because of left forearm inflammation. He had no record and a 5.73 ERA after his first two starts of the season. In his eighth season, Smyly is 35-35 with a 4.15 ERA in 190 appearances (113 starts) for the Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants and Braves.
Kazmar, 36, was hitless in one at-bat this season. His only other major league experience came in 2008 when he played 19 games with the San Diego Padres, going 8-for-39 (.205).
Pache, 22, was 4-for-30 (.133) earlier this season before he went on the IL with a left groin strain. He had just four career regular-season at-bats before this season but went 4-for-22 (.182) with a double and a home run in seven playoff games last season.
