LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA--Long Beach's long-closed landmark hotel on Ocean Blvd, will undergo a $150 million renovation. Built in 1926, and originally one of Conrad Hilton's original hotels, The Breakers served as a go-to destination in the early 20th century.

Set for completion in 2023, the 15-story hotel will include 185 guest rooms and suites, the town's only rooftop terrace with 360-degree seaside views, a jazz club and whiskey bar, a new pool on the third-floor terrace, and Long Beach's only luxury hotel spa, featuring nine high-end treatment rooms and a two-level fitness center. The famous Sky Room restaurant will reopen under the supervision of Michelin Star Chef Joe Isidori.

Hotel Impossible

Anthony Melchiorri, the television personality best known for helping struggling hotels find secure footing on the Hotel Impossible television show, is partnering with Long Beach-based development company, Pacific6 to bring The Breakers back to life nearly 35 years after it closed as a hospitality venue.

Melchiorri's company, Argeo Hospitality, working with the Pacific6 team, plans to retain much of the charm of the building's exterior, the entrance columns, and the ornate ceilings in the lobby. Argeo offers resources and expertise in the hospitality industry under Melchiorri, whose experience includes working at The Algonquin Hotel, the Lucerne Hotel, and the Plaza Hotel early in his career. He is best known for transforming struggling hotel properties of all sizes into profitable businesses through improved facilities, services, and branding. This will be his first venture in hotel ownership.

Last year he produced a video asking Congress for assistance for the hospitality industry.

Melchiorri had this to say about the Long Beach Breakers project:

“The Breakers Hotel has a character and soul that cannot be replaced, and we are working together to design an experience and respite that is one of a kind in Long Beach. We’re taking the history of this iconic location, giving it a revamp worthy of the 21st century, and matching it with a level of service and comfort that can only be found in the most luxurious of destinations. The end goal is to leave an indelible impression on everyone who walks through the door. Each guest will feel different when they leave”

The hotel is within walking distance to many of the town's renaissance features, including the Convention and Entertainment Center, the restaurant district, and the Aquarium of the Pacific. Its proximity to the Port of Long Beach will make it an ideal stopover for cruisers embarking from the port, as well as those wishing to visit the charming island city of Avalon on Santa Catalina, via the nearby Catalina Express ferry.

Long Beach has seen half a decade of growth and excitement, based in part on the expansion of Carnival Cruise Line's presence at the port. Though the cruise industry is still suffering due to travel restrictions delaying the restart of cruise travel, the expectation is that once cruising resumes, the growth of the tourism section in the city will bounce back along with it. Long Beach Financial Management Director John Gross was recently quoted as saying:

"No additional shortfalls [of revenue] are anticipated in subsequent years," he said, “assuming carnival cruise gets back to normal operations.”

John Molina, Founding Partner of Pacific6 had this to say:

“Long Beach has always been my home. I was born here, educated here and now I am raising my family here. This city has afforded me so many opportunities; I have made life-long friends, wonderful colleagues and have built tremendous businesses here. Even when I travel, my heart is never far from Long Beach. Reopening the Breakers is my gift back to the City I love. Every great City needs a crown jewel hotel, and for Long Beach, that is the Breakers. My father used to say, ‘if you are going to do something, do it right.’ I can’t imagine doing the Breakers right without Anthony and his team coming on board. You need to have the best team, if you are going to have the best hotel. And there is nobody better.”
