Cover picture for the articleST. JOHN BOSCO (5-0) VS. NO. 1 MATER DEI (4-0) Where, when: Santa Ana Stadium, Saturday, 7 p.m. Analysis: It’s obvious these are the two best teams in the CIF Southern Section. CalHiSports.com has St. John Bosco at No. 1 and Mater Dei at No. 2 in its state rankings. St. John Bosco (4-0 in the Trinity League) last week trounced Orange Lutheran 55-0. The Braves rushed for 237 yards, led by junior Rayshon Luke’s 65 on only three carries, and passed for 290 yards with sophomore Pierce Clarkson and junior Katin Houser again rotating at quarterback. That Bosco offense operates behind a mammoth offensive line that includes junior guard Earnest Greene (6-5, 330). Mater Dei (4-0 in league) last week cruised to a 49-13 win over Santa Margarita. The Monarchs had a 28-0 lead in the first quarter. Junior running back Raleek Brown rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Freshman quarterback Elijah Brown continued his steady play, completing 20 of 25 passes for 291 yards and four touchdowns. Josiah Zamora had six receptions for 60 yards and touchdown. All sports competition comes down to matchups. The matchup that could decide this game: St. John Bosco’s defensive backfield vs. Mater Dei’s receivers. The Braves’ defensive secondary that includes standout junior cornerback Tayvion Beasley might keep Mater Dei’s talented group of pass catchers covered long enough for their defensive front to get after the Monarchs’ freshman quarterback, limit his time to find receivers and disrupt the Mater Dei offensive game plan. It could be that small edge that makes a difference in what looks like an evenly-matched game featuring two great teams.
