The New York Yankees are adding a veteran southpaw to their list of pitching options with the signing of Mike Montgomery to a minor league deal, according to FanSided.

The signing would be the second consecutive minor league contract for Montgomery, who spent spring training with the New York Mets but was released on March 28 after posting a 6.14 ERA in four preseason appearances.

Montgomery, 31, has spent six years in the majors with the Seattle Mariners (2015-16), Chicago Cubs (2016-19) and Kansas City Royals (2019-20). The highlight of Montgomery’s career came in 2016 when he recorded the final out in Game 7 of the World Series as the Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians.

In 2020, Montgomery posted a 5.06 ERA with the Royals, ending up with no decisions in three games, including one start.

Montgomery has pitched in 183 games (70 starts) in his career, recording a 23-34 record, three saves, a 3.84 ERA and 415 strikeouts in 541 innings.
