This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were in hysterics on Wednesday as Alison Hammond and Josie Gibson prepared for a potentially tricky outside broadcast in Cambridge.

The hapless pair were sent to the historic university city, famous for its winding River Cam, to work on their boating skills amid claims of a shortage in female punters.

But their initial broadcast quickly descended into chaos as they attempted to pronounce a boating term while reporting back to ITV studios during what rapidly turned into an innuendo filled show.

Here we go: This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were in hysterics on Wednesday as Alison Hammond and Josie Gibson prepared for an outside broadcast

'They’ve let us into sophisticated Cambridge and today is a very special day because Josie and I are going to learn how to become punting chauffeurs. It’s going to be absolutely amazing,' Alison, 46, told the hosts.

Sensing potential disaster, Holly and Phil struggled to compose themselves after Josie, 36, made a game attempt at using some easily misinterpreted boating terminology.

'That is called a quant,' she said, referring to the long pole traditionally used to propel punt boats across water.

Awkward: But their initial broadcast quickly descended into chaos as they attempted to pronounce a boating term while reporting back to ITV studios

With the hosts busting into laughter an uncertain Alison quickly cut in, adding: 'So we’re going to learn how to quant – quant. Did you hear me correctly?

'This is called a quant. That is called a punt. She is called Josie, I’m called Alison and we’re going to have a great day.'

Evidently amused, Holly, remarked: 'This is the greatest bit of television you will ever see.'

'This will take us off air forever!' Phillip promptly added, referring to Bristolian Josie's awkward pronunciation of the boating term.

There she is: Alison was in characteristically high spirits during her latest outside broadcast

Alison and Jodie were soon given the opportunity to practice their punting after gingerly climbing aboard two separate flat-bottomed boats, with neither managing to impress.

'Trust your quant!' Josie yelled as the pair precariously struggled to maintain their balance.

Looking on from the safety of the studio, Holly remarked: 'I feel like any minute now one of them is going in.'

The presenter later found time for some playful innuendo while guest Liz Earle cooked a vegetarian dish during the show's wellness section.

Reflecting on her meal, she asked: 'I'm like where's the sausage?'

With laughter ringing out across the studio, an oblivious Phil remarked: 'Is it essential at barbecues?'

'For me, I'm a meat eater!' she replied.

Digging in, Phil said: 'I'm going to try a cauliflower steak,' to which Holly coyly finished: 'With a sausage on the side.'
