Australia's health minister has been admitted to hospital with a suspected infection just hours after Victorian Premier Dan Andrews was placed in intensive care after a horror fall.

Greg Hunt is being kept overnight for observation and is being administered antibiotics and fluid by hospital staff.

Hunt's condition is not believed to be related to the Covid-19 vaccine.

Along with Department of Health secretary Brendan Murphy, Hunt was among the first to receive the AstraZeneca vaccination at a Melbourne clinic on Sunday.

Victorian Premier Dan Andrews was also hospitalised after breaking several ribs and damaging his spine after slipping on wet stairs while getting ready for work on Tuesday

'He is being kept overnight for observation and is being administered antibiotics and fluid,' a statement from Mr Hunt's office said.

'The minister is expected to make a full recovery.'

He served as the nation's Federal Health Minister through the coronavirus pandemic, having stepped into the position back in 2017.

Hunt is the third Morrison government minister to go on leave in recent weeks, with Attorney-General Christian Porter and Defence Minister Linda Reynolds also on leave at the moment for medical reasons.

Porter said last week he would take a short period of leave to assess his mental health on the advice of his doctor. He has denied accusations of a historical rape allegation when he was a teenager.

Senator Reynolds said on Sunday she was re-assessed recently by her cardiologist for a pre-existing medical condition.

She has also been under heavy criticism for her handling of a rape allegation flagged by former staffer Brittany Higgins in Canberra.

Earlier on Tuesday, Daniel Andrews was also hospitalised after breaking several ribs and damaging his spine after slipping on wet stairs while getting ready for work.

The Victorian Premier's office initially said the fall on Tuesday morning was 'concerning' but the leader had not suffered any head injuries.

His office later confirmed the accident happened in accommodation the Andrews family were staying at in Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne's CBD, where they had been enjoying the long weekend.

'A CT scan has revealed several broken ribs and vertebrae damage, and subsequent medical advice has recommended I remain in intensive care for the next few days,' Andrews said.

James Merlino will serve as Acting Premier in Victoria until Andrews recovers.
