Shirley Manson has mocked Maroon 5’s Adam Levine for claiming that there are “no bands anymore”.

Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music on Wednesday (3 March), Levine said that he’d recently rediscovered Avril Lavigne’s old albums and had been playing them to his daughter.

“It’s funny, when the first Maroon 5 album came out there were still other bands,” he said. “I feel like there aren’t any bands anymore, you know? That’s the thing that makes me kind of sad, is that there were just bands. There’s no bands anymore, and I feel like they’re a dying breed.”

Backtracking and admitting that there were still “plenty” of bands, he continued: “Maybe they’re not in the limelight quite as much, or in the pop limelight, but I wish there could be more of those around.”

The comments were ridiculed on Twitter by Garbage singer Manson, who tweeted: “What are we Adam Levine? CATS?!?!?”

Muna also replied to Levine’s comments, writing: “Funny that we’re the greatest band in the f***ing world.”

US rock group Eve6 tweeted: “Adam Levine there are like 500k bands and they all think yer a nerd.”

Other Twitter users also took aim at Levine for the comments, with one commenter writing: “Um... Bands are still a thing, Adam.”

“I’m surprised that a guy who has been in the music business for over 20 years says something as stupid as that. Plus Maroon 5 isn’t even a band anymore, it’s just him,” another Twitter user wrote.

“Wait are you telling me Maroon 5 is a band and not just Adam Levine,” one comment read.

“There are plenty of bands lmao rock and metal just isn’t mainstream but it’s there if you seek it out,” another commenter wrote.
