Trump campaign aide Corey Lewandowski says he doesn't think Lara should run for Senate because Washington is 'broken' and she can 'do more on the outside'

A former top campaign aide to Donald Trump doesn't think Lara Trump running for Senate is the best idea, claiming she would make a bigger impact 'being on the outside' of Washington.

Corey Lewandowski's comments come as speculation reignited that the former president's daughter in law could launch a Senate run in her home state as North Carolina Senator Richard Burr plans to retire at the end of his term in 2022.

'Let me try to get a little intel here. Lara Trump for Senate, is this happening?' Epoch Times editor and host Jan Jekielek asked Lewandowski in a taped interview during the Conservative Political Action Conference on Sunday.

'I hope so. I'm a great fan of Lara. Her and Eric are amazing people,' Lewandowski said.

'But here's what I would say to them: 'Why would you want to do this?' Look, I mean, I love you. This is like if the dog catches the car, then what do you do? What if you actually go and win, which she would win. Then you've got to serve,' he continued. 'And my problem is Washington is so fundamentally broken, that I don't know if it's a good thing anymore.'

'I think Lara Trump – and she would be an amazing United States Senator if she decided to run, because she would win – she has more influence and more opportunity to drive a narrative today being on the outside than being stuck in a broken system,' Lewandowski added.

The New Hampshire native is heading up a new political action committee that will back 'America First' candidates – specifically those launching primary runs against anti-Trump Republicans in 2022.

The Trump-backed Fight Back Now America PAC will look to primary Republican members of Congress who voted to advance Trump's second impeachment.

Jakielek understandably expressed confusion over why Lewandowski would discourage Lara Trump from running for Senate despite his effort to get more America First – read pro-Trump – lawmakers elected to Congress.

'Lara Trump's megaphone is massive, right? And she has such convictions to what she believes in. And look, I know a number of the U.S. senators. You ask them, 'How much of your job do you love?' They say, 'I love 20 per cent. The other 80 per cent are things I have to do and I can only work so much time on my specific issue,' Lewandowski detailed.

He continued: 'It's really hard when you're inside that system.'

'Now there are great people who should run for office, and will run for office,' Lewandowski said. 'And those are the people we're going to support.'

The former Trump campaign aide – who worked on the former president's 2016 and 2020 run – argued it isn't worth it for people with more influence to have to deal with the 'lunatics' in Washington, D.C.

'The president wanted me to run for office in New Hampshire – and I said, 'What if I actually won?' And I would have won, is the problem. I said, 'I would have to go to Washington, D.C. and work with some of these lunatics,' he said during his Sunday interview, which was released on Monday.

Lewandowski said governors have the ability to help people more directly than those in Congress.

'I think being a governor is a much better chief executive role than being one of 100 U.S. senators or one of 435 members of Congress because every decision you make as a governor has a direct impact on the people's lives in that state almost immediately,' he explained. 'And we've seen that with the different ways that the governors have responded to this pandemic.'

At the time of Donald Trump's impeachment acquittal last month, new speculation emerged that Lara could still be considering making a run for Senate in her home state.

Lara is married to Trump's middle son Eric and the couple lives in New York with their two children Eric Jr., 3, and Carolina, 1.

Richar Burr, whose Senate seat Lara would be filling, was one of the seven GOP senators who voted for Trump's impeachment. The Republican from North Carolina already announced that he would not seek reelection in 2022.

Trump ally and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham told Fox News at the time of the impeachment vote that Burr's decision to side with Democrats basically assured that if Lara were to launch a bid, she would earn the Republican nomination in the state.

'My friend Richard Burr just made Lara Trump almost the certain nominee for the Senate seat in North Carolina to replace him if she runs,' Graham told Fox.

One senior Republican official with knowledge of her plans told The New York Times at the time that while the January 6 Capitol riot did sour Lara's desire to seek office, she is still considering it.

The official said she would decide over the next few months whether to run as part of a coordinated effort to bring back the Trump family to politics.
