Mike Tomlin: Eric Bieniemy not landing head-coaching job is a 'real head-scratcher'

The NFL has glorified the Rooney Rule for promoting diversity, yet there are only three Black head coaches in the league: Pittsburgh Steelers boss Mike Tomlin, Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores and new Houston Texans head coach David Culley.

Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy interviewed for every open head coaching position this offseason, but was passed on by all seven teams despite his immense success with the Kansas City offense.

In a recent interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Tomlin admitted that he's still frustrated by the lack of diversity in the NFL and also said he doesn't understand why Bieniemy was passed on.

"Bieniemy is a real head-scratcher for me," Tomlin said. "Every offensive coordinator Andy Reid has had in the last 20 years got a head job. One of those guys, Brad Childress, hired me in Minnesota in 2006. Now, Andy has the best offense he's ever had and [Bieniemy] can't get a job?"

Tomlin continued to say that he doesn't have an answer for how to improve diversity among head coaches in the NFL, saying, "all we have is hope" that things will get better.
