Peggy Lipton's Kids: Meet the Late Star's Children and Family

Peggy Lipton was beloved in Hollywood history for her acting, modeling and singing talents, but her two daughters, Kidada Jones and Rashida Jones, remember her for being an amazing mom.

The late star shares her girls with her ex-husband, Quincy Jones. Peggy and the legendary record producer met in 1972 at the time she was starring as detective Julie Barnes on the hit crime series The Mod Squad. “I knew he was The One the moment I met him,” the former actress told Next Tribe in November 2018.

After two years of dating, Peggy and Quincy tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony surrounded by friends and family in 1974. That same year, they welcomed their first child, Kidada, followed by Rashida two years later in 1976. The couple eventually split after 14 years in 1990.

Because of their parents’ fame and superstardom, Kidada and Rashida were catapulted into the spotlight at a young age. As they grew up, the beauties followed in their mom and dad’s famous footsteps, paving their own careers as actresses. For years, Peggy got to watch as her daughters blossomed into successful stars and become notable in their own right.

Sadly, Peggy died at age 72 following a 15-year battle with colon cancer in May 2019. At the time, the Twin Peaks alum’s children issued a statement announcing her death.

“She made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side,” the statement read, according to the L.A. Times. “We feel so lucky for every moment we spent with her. We can’t put all of our feelings into words right now, but we will say: Peggy was and will always be our beacon of light, both in this world and beyond. She will always be a part of us.”

Since Peggy’s death, Kidada and Rashida have continued to honor their mom’s incredible legacy. On what would’ve been Peggy’s 74th birthday in August 2020, the sibling duo shared heartwarming posts to commemorate the meaningful occasion.

“Happy birthday, mama,” Rashida sweetly penned alongside a throwback photo of Peggy. “I feel you smiling down on us. Miss you every day in every way.” As for Kidada, the doting daughter uploaded a touching tribute, writing, “My first love. My true love. My forever love. Happy birthday, my precious mommy.”

There’s no doubt Peggy would be so proud of how far her kids have come today.

Kidada Jones

Peggy became a mom for the first time when she and Quincy welcomed Kidada on March 22, 1974. Growing up, Kidada had a rebellious streak. According to IMDb, she got kicked out of 11 schools for “acting up due to not fitting in.” She eventually grew out of her unruly ways, however, and by the late 1990s, she completely transformed her life.

In 1998, Kidada made her film debut opposite Usher in The Faculty. The following year, she appeared in Black & White and Thicker Than Water. Her latest acting credits include roles in 2004’s Proud, 2002’s Empire and 2000’s Intern.

In addition to acting, Kidada is a model and fashion designer. In 2011, she created a children’s clothing and jewelry line for Disney, per People. Nostalgic Express also reported Kidada was set to start a Japanese-inspired clothing brand called Dolly Pop with Aaliyah, but their plans were halted when the singer died in 2001.

Fortunately, Kidada has created tons of other projects. In 2017, she authored a book titled School of Awake: A Girl’s Guide to the Universe. According to her website, the book is filled with “empowering advice for becoming your best self.”

As far as her personal life goes, Kidada has walked down the aisle once. In 2003, she married Proud actor Jeffrey Nash, but they called it quits after three years.

Rashida Jones

Peggy’s second child was born on February 25, 1976. Considering she grew up in the glitz and glamour in Hollywood, it’s no surprise Rashida followed in her mom’s acting footsteps. But before she pursued her own career, she studied religion and philosophy at Harvard University.

After graduating in 1997, according to Alma, Rashida made her acting debut in The Last Don that same year. Since then, she’s starred in some of the most famous sitcoms such as Parks and Recreation, The Office, Portlandia, Black-ish and Boston Public. To date, she has more than 75 acting credits in films and shows, including East of A, Freaks and Geeks, I Love You, Man, The Simpsons and her latest in 2020’s On the Rocks.

Rashida is also a producer. So far, she has producing credits in #BlackAF, Claws, Angie Tribeca, Good Fortune and more.

When she’s not working in Hollywood, Rashida is spending time with her husband, Ezra Koenig — whom she married in 2015 — and their son, Isaiah. Though Rashida feels fortunate that Peggy got to meet her little bundle of joy, she said she was in “grief-shock” when her mom died eight months after giving birth in August 2018.

“This has been a very emotionally intense couple of years,” she candidly told NPR in February 2021. “It was sort of like back-to-back-to-back-to-back, just wrenching, pulling my heart in all different directions. I don’t even know if that’s a word, but I was just not in my body at all and just had a baby. I was doubly not in my body.”
