Mom will end its run on CBS this year at the conclusion of season eight, it has been confirmed.

The season finale that is scheduled for 6 May will now be the last episode ever, with news of the show’s cancellation coming after series co-lead Anna Faris departed the sitcom last year to “pursue new opportunities”.

The first seven seasons had featured Alison Janney and Faris as mother and daughter Bonnie and Christy Plunkett.

“For the past eight years, we’ve had the great honour to bring these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers every week,” executive producers Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker and Nick Bakay told Variety.

“From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series… we take great pride in knowing Mom has positively impacted so many lives.”

Kristen Johnston, who played recovering addict Tammy Diffendorf in Mom, tweeted: “Such a huge bummer. This show has been such a total joy & honour to be a part of. It’s been life-changing for me to be on a show that’s about recovery & women supporting each other thru thick & thin. Plus, Mom has the BEST fans ever.”

Fans flocked to Twitter to express their disappointment, with one writing: “This is heartbreaking and Mom will forever be a show that helped me through countless struggles in my life. Thank you @MomCBS for everything.”

Another added: “Loved watching these flawed women help each other, grow & make me laugh.  Best cast, characters & writers on TV. Thank you all for entertaining & educating me. I learned so much about addiction & recovery.”
