The Columbia County Sheriff’s office says Dionne Leslie died of his injuries and the other teen is expected to survive.

Thomas’ grandson volunteered with Leslie for the United States Young Marines, a youth leadership program.

“He was a good youngin’; didn’t matter that he was Black and we were white, it didn’t matter,” Thomas explained.

Patrice Whitehead also knew Leslie.

She works as the director of Happy Hearts daycare, which is just across the street from where police say the shooting happened.

“You can’t even make somebody upset anymore Back when we were little you just fist-fight it out, now they shoot it out,” Whitehead said.

Whitehead tells Action News Jax the daycare went under lockdown with 32 kids inside.

Whitehead says Leslie played basketball with her kids when they were growing up.

“I live right around the corner and my kids played with these kids. It’s just scary that that’s what this world has come to now,” Whitehead said.
