(PARIS) Soccer international forward Neymar has reportedly agreed to a four-year contract extension with French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), bringing an end to their months-long negotiation period, according to ESPN.

The Brazilian star's contract was set to expire in June 2022, but his new deal will keep him with the club until 2026. Neymar spoke on Sunday regarding the negotiations and made his intentions clear, much to the delight of the Parisian fans.

"I want to stay," Neymar said on Sunday in an interview on French television. Leonardo Araújo, PSG's sporting director, whose relationship with Neymar Jr. and his father has changed for the better in the last year, was key in the negotiations and the agreement reached.

Araújo wants to do the same result with French striker Kylian Mbappe, who will be out of his contract in 18 months. Unlike Neymar, Mbappe has not mentioned his decision publicly regarding wanting to stay or depart from the club.

Neymar, who turns 29 on Friday, is thrilled to continue his time in Paris and could sign his new deal within the month, according to ESPN. The deal is likely to be done before PSG's Champions League round-of-16 matchup against Barcelona on Feb. 15.

Neymar has won three Ligue 1 titles since making the jump from Barcelona to PSG in 2017 on a record €222 million deal. The forward has also helped the club earn two Coupes de France, two Coupes de la Ligue and two Trophees des Champions.

The club looks to improve on its Champions League status after losing the final to Bayern Munich in 2020 (1-0).

Neymar has played 100 games for PSG, reaching the milestone before Sunday's loss at Lorient despite scoring twice.
