How To Watch the Super Bowl for Free Online

Download Yahoo! Sports

Wondering where to watch the Super Bowl for free? As in years past, Super Bowl LVI will also stream for free on various NFL apps and certain participating teams’ digital properties. You’ll also be able to stream the Super Bowl for free by downloading the Yahoo! Sports app, as well as the NFL app. The Yahoo! Sports app is free, and it will carry the game for free, but it’s worth noting that screencasting is not allowed. NBC is the only major network to have the full game experience, and you can stream on your smart TV using NBC’s streaming service Peacock, or watch for free without cable or a subscription using an antenna.

How To Watch the Super Bowl Online in 2022

Besides watching the Super Bowl on NBC or on the NBC Universal-owned Telemundo (which offers the game in Spanish), there are a few other streaming options to consider. We’ve collected the top options below if you want to learn how to watch the Super Bowl without cable in 2022. Since NBC is broadcasting the game, NBC’s Peacock Premium subscription is the best and cheapest option for streaming Super Bowl LVI without cable.

1. Peacock Premium

BEST OVERALL

Now that NBC Universal has its own streaming service, it continues to unroll even more options for subscribers. If you want to stream the Super Bowl online through Peacock, you’ll need to subscribe to the Premium version ($4.99 a month for ad-supported streaming) or Peacock Premium Plus ($9.99 a month for ad-free streaming). In addition to getting football, you’ll also get Peacock Originals (like Dr. Death, MacGruber, and Girls5Eva), Premier League soccer, and a bunch of next-day NBC shows. Plus, after the Super Bowl, you can watch The Winter Olympics. The Premium Plus package also allows you to download content onto your device and watch it offline, so if there’s a great replay or something you want to catch later, you can. The service works with most web browsers, mobile devices and smart TVs.

Even if you opt for the ad-free version of Peacock, we do expect the Super Bowl commercials to be available as part of the Super Bowl broadcast. If you want to stream the Super Bowl without signing up for an expensive live TV service like Hulu + Live TV or YouTube TV, then this is your best option. And, yes, even if you spring for the $9.99 ad-free version of Peacock, you can watch the Super Bowl commercials as part of the live Super Bowl LVI broadcast.

2. Hulu + Live TV

BEST ALL-IN TV

It’s the reliable, niche streaming service you know and love, and with a subscription to its Live TV service, you can stream the big game no problem. Easily watch the Super Bowl on your laptop or download the necessary apps to hook the game up to smart televisions, gaming consoles and media streamers. It’s available on and compatible with devices including Android, iOS, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV, Roku, PlayStation 4 and 5, the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox One, among others.

3. YouTube TV

BEST DVR FUNCTION

The video streaming website you know and love has a TV branch as well, and it happens to be a place where you can watch a lot of sports. There are more than 85 channels to choose from comprising entertainment, news, sports and reality shows, and NBC is one of them. We love this service because you can record without storage limits, and each subscription includes six accounts. You could also try a free trial on the big day itself if football is all you’re here for. The service boasts no hidden fees and comes at a similar price to FuboTV (below). The only caveat is it’s not available in all zip codes — so check before you plan on using it.

4. FuboTV

BEST FOR GENERAL SPORTS

FuboTV enables you to watch live sports and TV without cable — and includes many of the top channels you’d have access to with cable, including NBC, CBS, FOX, MSNBC, Animal Planet, TLC and more. The price point is essentially the same as cable, at $65 per month for their most basic package, but you can watch channels live and on-demand and cancel anytime. We recommend starting your seven-day free trial with enough time to watch the game and canceling before you get hit with the $65 monthly charge. You’ll be able to watch the Super Bowl through Apple TV, Roku, Amazon, Fire TV, Chromecast, iOS and Android once you’ve signed up.

5. DirecTV Stream

BEST HBO MAX BUNDLE

The premiere offering of this giant streaming service includes HBO Max. And if you sign up for the Ultimate package that includes HBO Max for an entire year as well as 130+ local channels, including NBC, where you’ll be able to watch the game. This offering is a bit more expensive, but if you were already considering getting HBO Max for all of this year’s movie releases, why not just bundle it all into one purchase?

Also Consider: Antenna TV

One of the best ways to watch is also the most old school: antenna TV. NBC has owned and operated stations and local affiliates all over the country, so there’s an excellent chance that wherever you are, you can get NBC locally. If you don’t have an antenna, you’ll need to buy one, but it’s a one-time purchase. Unlike streaming services and cable, you never have to worry about price hikes or monthly fees. Antenna TV is always free, making this one of the most economical ways to watch the big game. Best of all, an antenna will also give you access to NBC’s other marquee sporting event this year, the Olympics.

We’ve picked out the one below as our favorite because it’s affordable but will stream a high-quality picture, providing that you’ve got good reception in your area.

Who’s Playing in Super Bowl LVI?

Following the retirement of Tom Brady, we’re entering a radically different era for football. The Los Angeles Rams are squaring off against the Cincinnati Bengals this year. They’ll be playing at the SoFi stadium in Inglewood, California. One quirk of this game is that even though the Rams are playing at their home stadium, they’ll actually be the away team. That’s because the two NFL conferences, the AFC and NFC, alternate which team gets to be home and which is the away team for each Super Bowl. This year, the AFC Bengals get to be the home team.

This year is only the second time in history when a team will be playing the Super Bowl at home, so it’s a pretty big deal. The first time was only in 2020 when Tom Brady led the Buccaneers to victory at Tampa’s Raymond James stadium.

While this may seem like a battle between the West Coast and the Midwest, both teams actually have roots in Ohio. The Rams originated as the Cleveland Rams in the 1930s, whereas the Bengals have been a Cincinnati team since their inception in the late 1960s. That said, the Rams have spent most of their career as a Southern California team, and this will be their second Super Bowl appearance since returning to Los Angeles in 2016.

The Rams (as the St. Louis Rams) have won one Super Bowl in 1999. The Bengals have made multiple appearances but hope to land their first win at this Super Bowl.

Which Network Is Broadcasting the Super Bowl in 2022?

In 2022, Super Bowl LVI will be broadcast on NBC, NBC’s streaming service Peacock, and NBC Universal-owned Telemundo. If you already have a cable TV service that carries NBC, then you don’t need to learn how to watch the Super Bowl online — simply turn on the TV and flip to NBC around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The Super Bowl is always the biggest TV event of the year, and the broadcast rights cycle between all of the NFL’s broadcasting partners: NBC, CBS and FOX. That means you can always watch the Super Bowl locally, using an antenna.

Initially, the 2022 Super Bowl was supposed to take place on CBS. However, because Feb. 13 also falls within the two-week NBC broadcast of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing (which takes place from Feb. 4-20), CBS agreed to trade with the Peacock network and aired last year’s big-ticket instead.

Now, NBC has broadcast rights to both sporting events, which means the network can max out its viewership and advertising revenue much like it did the last time this happened, in 2018. Back then NBC was estimated to have taken in a whopping $1.4 billion from ad sales for the combined events.

Who Is Performing at This Year’s Half-Time Show?

Back in September, the NFL and its sponsors revealed that Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar would take the stage at half-time in what is one of the most coveted musical venues around. Collectively the group holds 49 Grammys and 19 No. 1 Billboard albums, so naturally, people seem pretty pumped about the top-secret collaboration.

Which Commercials Will Stream at This Year’s Super Bowl?

What else do we have to look forward to other than the game, the snacks and the half-time show? The ads, of course, the ads. The Super Bowl is one of the only times we actually want to see all the ads on our TV screens. Brands and companies go all-out with celebrity cameos and creative campaigns, and this year NBC is charging as much as $6.5 million for a 30-second slot. So far, the likes of Taco Bell, Frito-Lay, General Motors, PepsiCo, Pringles, Quickbooks, Crypto.com, Rakuten, FTX, Nissan, Meta/Facebook, TurboTax, Squarespace, Toyota, DraftKings, WeatherTech, Vroom and Avocados From Mexico have committed to airing commercials at the 2022 show.

Wondering if you can watch the Super Bowl commercials on Peacock? Yes! Even if you pay for the commercial-free version of Peacock, the NBC streaming app will still be streaming the complete Super Bowl LVI broadcast, so you will be able to watch the commercials.

What’s This Year’s Big Post-Super Bowl Ticket?

Because the Super Bowl is essentially the highest-rated event on television, the network airing the game tries to take advantage of that lead-in audience with an episode or premiere of a highly anticipated show. In the past, shows including Survivor, The Voice, The Masked Singer, Friends, Family Guy, and This Is Us have all aired post-game episodes. This year NBC is taking advantage of its platform by airing the debut episode of Peacock’s anticipated Bel-Air, aka the dramatic remake of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
