    Sarah Thomas to become first woman referee to officiate the Super Bowl

    Sarah Thomas during her sixth NFL season will become the first female to officiate the Super Bowl in NFL history.

    The NFL announced the news Tuesday as Thomas who joined the league in 2015, as its first female on-field official, had met officiating crew eligibility requirements.

    According to ESPN, the Super Bowl officiating crew are required to have a minimum of five years of experience as well as in-season performance.

    "Sarah Thomas has made history again as the first female Super Bowl official," said Troy Vincent, Sr., the NFL's executive vice resident of football operations, per ESPN.

    Vincent added, "Her elite performance and commitment to excellence has earned her the right to officiate the Super Bowl. Congratulations to Sarah on this well-deserved honor."

    Thomas will call the game alongside other pro football top officials including Eugene Hall, Carl Cheffers, Rusty Baynes, James Coleman, Fred Bryan, Dino Paganelli and Mike Wimmer.
