Implications of Donald Trump's Twitter Account Suspension

I read an article on News Break informing “Twitter permanently suspends Donald Trump’s account” posted by ABC News. Trump was one of the most prolific tweeters. I expect interesting implications of this incident.

I am not into politics but read many tweets from Donald Trump within the last few years.

Some of the tweets from Trump made me smile or chuckle sometimes because they were funny for me.

The purpose of my short story is to keep my readers up-to-date with this interesting incident.

Since I have a strong interest in social media strategy and coming from a technology background, I estimate some implications posed by this political incident.

A few statements in the News Break article attracted my attention and made me think about this incident from different angles.

Here are two statements that I extracted from the ABC News article:

Donald Trump said:

“I predicted this would happen. We have been negotiating with various other sites and will have a big announcement soon, while we also look at the possibilities of building out our own platform in the near future. We will not be SILENCED!”

“Twitter is not about FREE SPEECH. They are all about promoting a Radical Left platform where some of the most vicious people in the world are allowed to speak freely.”

From a technology and social media point of views, building a new platform sounds interesting to me.

The primary implication of this potential platform is that Twitter may have a competitor.

A political incident may emerge a technological breakthrough.

I have mixed feelings about Twitter. I love using Twitter and see many benefits.

But I have concerns about the administration since I lost my Twitter account twice due to AI (Artificial Intelligence) faults. Let me share my experience briefly.

I accumulated thousands of followers on Twitter for over ten years. One day an alarm on my Twitter account caused my account to be suspended. The account and my list of followers couldn’t be recovered despite my best efforts. It created a terrible disappointment and shattered my trust on Twitter.

Considering the benefits of Twitter for writers, I created another account. The account’s purpose is solely to generate visibility for my articles and articles of bloggers and writers that I follow.

A few weeks ago, Twitter suspended my account again for no reason. I was informed via an email my account had violated Twitter rules and was thus flagged as non-compliant.

I provided Twitter with more-than-enough evidence. My content is about my articles, and I rarely share personal thoughts.

Twitter admitted it was a mistake and recovered my account. But I lost my contacts in Twitter Lists. After several requests, Twitter did not fix my issue, which was caused by the suspension process. This is what a supposedly intelligent system did! And Twitter support did not even acknowledge my emails.

I read many articles about and from people who lost their accounts for no reasons.

I know it hurts.

The situation for Trump seems to be different as he has more power than average people.

The ABC News article mentions that:

“Trump had attempted to post the same statement on Twitter, using the official @POTUS account, but the platform deleted the thread, saying users who are banned cannot post from other accounts. The @POTUS account, rarely used by Trump himself over the past four years, will be transferred over to the Biden administration following his inauguration”.

Considering my recent experience with Twitter, I was wondering whether this might be an AI induced ban with heavy discussions on social media or Twitter made an assessment to suspend Donald Trump’s account for actual violation of services.

When I reviewed the article again, this quote on the ABC article depicts that Twitter actually reviewed it and made a brief statement.

“After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” Twitter wrote in a statement.”

I came across another article on News Break titled Trump went 'ballistic' after being tossed off Twitter.

I think anyone whose account is suspended gets disappointed.

In an ideal world, rather than suspending an account giving notice to the account user with conduct guidelines can be a more humanistic approach. If the user habitually breaks the rules, then the suspension can be granted.

Having said this, I understand that this incident is an exception to a societal impact.

Since the account owner is a celebrity with a massive number of followers, this incident may escalate and have global implications on social media.

I don't know what will happen in other social media platforms but I believe we will read myriad of tweets about this incident on Twitter. Let's see how this incident will unfold.

Who knows we may have a competitor to Twitter.

When the competition starts the service providers can value their customers better.

I hope the Twitter admin will not suspend my account again because I wrote an article about them. But if they do, would I care! Surely, it won't be my loss. I share free insightful content for Twitter and obey their rules too.

Interesting times are ahead of us.
