Jason La Canfora: 'I'd be surprised' if Jason Garrett, and some other Giants assistants, returned in 2021

Sunday could still be the Giants’ 2020 finale – even with a win over Dallas, the G-Men still need Philadelphia to defeat Washington Sunday night to win the NFC East and reach the postseason – but whether they play one game in January or more, Jason Garrett might not be much longer for NY.

“I’ve been hearing since mid-season that it’s far more likely than not that Jason Garrett won’t be back,” NFL insider Jason La Canfora told Zach Gelb on WFAN Saturday night. “And, I’d be very surprised if there are not more changes made on that staff, including at offensive coordinator.”

Giants head coach Joe Judge already made one change mid-season, replacing offensive line coach Marc Colombo with Dave DeGuglielmo – who missed Sunday’s game due to COVID-19 protocol.

However, if a new OC does come along, that could spell curtains for Daniel Jones, who would enter 2021 learning his third different offensive system (potentially) in three seasons – and La Canfora, among others, isn’t convinced Jones is the right fit for Big Blue anyway.

“I have always been a skeptic,” La Canfora said. “People I trust in this league, who were evaluating that group of quarterbacks without a dog in the fight – not that they’re always right, but I wasn’t hearing from anybody that they had to take him where they took him. I was getting the sense that maybe the Giants saw some things in him that others didn’t.”

Jones’ numbers have regressed this year, even without Saquon Barkley and with the Giants being a better squad overall; in 13 games last season, he had 24 TD against 12 INT and 3027 yards, while he had just a 9:9 TD ratio and 2714 yards in 2020 in the same amount of action entering Sunday.

As La Canfora noted, part of that is due to some injuries Jones has dealt with this season, but the team’s lack of ability to find the end zone combined with a renewed penchant for turnovers (Jones’ fumble in the first half Sunday was his 11th of the season)

“It takes a village to raise a quarterback, but even with a high draft pick at running back, was that village going to be able to raise that quarterback, and in a relatively swift manner?” La Canfora asked. “We’ve seen what he was drafted into, and he’s already had one coaching change; add in that he dealt with some injuries and he turns it over a lot…can anyone say there was a major step forward taken?”

In fact, he says, it might be better for the Giants to miss the playoffs and get a Top 10 draft pick…but not necessarily better for Jones.

“There’s going to be more uncertainty next year, and they’re not a very good team,” La Canfora said. “The best thing for them would probably be not going to the playoffs and having a high pick; there will be four or five quarterbacks going in the first round, and if that does put you in QB range, and you have a new GM, maybe they’ll want go in a different direction.”
