PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Roller-skating is back in a big way and a Philadelphia organization is helping to make the old trend new again.

Head of Great on Skates Shamar Cunningham and his partner India Bernardino say roller-skating is back. The two bring drums, beats and roller tricks to each and every class they teach, with the goal of making affordable skate education accessible to local communities.

In their classes, roller-skating enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels come together.

“We like to keep skating alive through roller dance and bridging the gap between newer school skating and older school skating,” Bernardino explained.

Roller-skating has become such a hot trend that acclaimed rapper Common recently commissioned the group to perform during his November Roll to the Polls event outside of City Hall.

“Common did a performance and he called us out onto the stage and we were able to join him to contribute our positivity and talent,” Bernardino said.

The group is looking forward to 2021 after enjoying growing recognition as the go-to skating educators in the region.

Great on Skates organizers are looking to add more classes to encourage more people of all ages and backgrounds to get out and skate.

“For 2021, we want people to come harder with their skate dreams and skate goals,” Bernardino said.
