Longhorns signee named Mr. Texas Football High School Player of the Year

On Tuesday, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football and the Mercari Texas Bowl announced the recipient of the 2020 Mr. Texas Football High School Player of the Year.

This prestigious honor is awarded annually to the most outstanding high school football player in the state of Texas. Hallettsville running back and Texas signee Jonathon Brooks was Texas’ top player this year.

The winner of the Mr. Texas Football High School player of the Year was scheduled to be honored on the field at the Mercari Texas Bowl on Dec. 31, but that bowl game has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

As a senior, Brooks rushed for 3,530 yards and 62 touchdowns. His  athleticism was evident all over the field as a running back, pass catcher, defender and special teams contributor.

In total, Brooks accounted for 3,849 yards and 70 touchdowns this season. He played a critical role in Hallettsville reaching the 3A Division 1 state championship game, the Brahmas’ first title game appearance in their 107-year history.

Brooks is the second Texas running back to win the honor, joining former Longhorn rusher Jonathon Gray. Other notable players who won the award are Kyler Murray, Johnny Manziel, Jacquizz Rodgers, Spencer Sanders and Garrett Gilbert.
