Mindy Kaling enlists B.J. Novak to dress up as Santa for Christmas: 'This might become a tradition'

So this is the Christmas episode of "The Office" we've been missing.

Mindy Kaling dished to designer Tory Burch about her plans for Christmas this year – which includes friend and former "The Office" co-star B.J. Novak dressing up as Santa Claus to surprise her daughter.

"This is the whole ruse that we're going to do and this might become a tradition," Kaling, 41, told Burch.

Kaling and her daughter Katherine ("Kit") are going to be making cookies in the kitchen, when all of a sudden they are going to hear bells coming from another room. They'll find Novak, Kit's godfather, dressed up as Santa asleep on the sofa with a bag because he needed to take a rest.

"It's so complicated why Santa was there, why he's taking a nap," Kaling explained to Burch. They're not sure if she'll know it's him on some level, but they're making it work considering they can't visit The Grove where Kaling typically brings her 3-year-old daughter to see Santa.

"This is like cultural appropriation on our part, to be Christian," Kaling joked, considering she is Hindu and Novak is Jewish.

The pair's Christmas plans should please fans of "The Office" – after all, who could forget Kelly's (Kaling) rendition of "We Belong," sung to Ryan (Novak)? 

Kaling surprised fans in October by revealing she had a second child earlier this year, Spencer.

"I'm telling it for the first time now, it feels so strange. But I gave birth to a baby boy on Sept. 3," Kaling told late-night host Stephen Colbert.

"Being pregnant during the pandemic was a little scary," she wrote on Instagram. "But it made me appreciate all the doctors, nurses and medical professionals who continue to work tirelessly giving treatment to those who need it, putting their own lives at risk."

"(Kit) is obsessed with him (well, his toys)," she added. "It’s been so fun having him in the house, I almost forget I’m outnumbered now. Love and grateful hugs. Xoxo MK"

Her pregnancy with Kit was a surprise to fans too, and she hasn't publicly shared the paternity. "My feeling is that until I speak to my daughter about that, I’m not going to talk to anyone else about it," she told The New York Times in 2019.
