Did you know that STEM Space related activities are popular on Pinterest? Well, if you didn’t know, I’m telling you now. Perhaps people are just getting more interested in Space? Perhaps, the interest has always been there and we just didn’t know. Or, maybe it’s because this year the Hubble Space Telescope achieved its 30th year in orbit.

Who knows? Either way, the interest is there.

So, in this article, we’ll walk through how to bring the NASA Space Exhibit home to your kids. Whether you would like to use this as a part of your homeschool curriculum, or just as something fun to do, this article is for you.

Beyond Spaceship Earth

For starters, if you haven’t heard, the Indianapolis Children’s Museum has an indoor exhibit called Beyond Spaceship Earth.

Beyond Spaceship Earth tells the dynamic story of space exploration from NASA’s Project Mercury program. This particular program sent the first Americans into space, to the International Space Station (ISS).

In the exhibit, you walk through the “spaceship”, learning about space-travel history and the life of an astronaut, even what they ate and drank.

Aside from venturing through the exhibit, there are scheduled shows. During the show, you are able to also see the actual escape pod movie prop used in the 2016 film Star Trek: Beyond.

What to Do at Home

To accomplish this experience in the comfort of your own home, some ideas would be to dress up as astronauts, watch Star Trek, and also use an online telescope to see space in real time.

Decorate your home or your children’s room in glow in the dark star and galaxy kits, create planet mobiles such as the ones found at Five Below for $5, or browse Pinterest for a ton of hands on space related activities.

Various STEM space related Pinterest activities include making glitter galaxy jars, lava lamps, galaxy playdough, making foil printed moons, etc.

Other ideas include creating meals with a space theme. For example, why not consider making a planet pizza and serving it on star themed paper plates. Or, how about serving Sun chips and fruit kabob rockets, all of which fit the space theme perfectly.

Go Right to NASA from Home

If you want to get even more creative, how about doing NASA virtual tours. Did you know that NASA has a site dedicated to bringing their experience home to you?

According to NASA at Home their site allows you to “explore our solar system and beyond, uncovering worlds, stars and cosmic mysteries near and far with our powerful fleet of space and ground-based missions”.

From their home pagem you can explore the NASA facilities, visit the laboratories, tour the Moon and experience the James Webb Space Telescope. Did you know that the James Webb Space Telescope is the most powerful space telescope ever built?

Final Thoughts

Regardless of why the topic of STEM space related activities are trending on Pinterest, now is a great time to further explore space in new ways. Whether it’s from an activity kit, book, watching a movie, or virtually touring NASA itself, now is a wonderful time to get kids engaged in space all from the comfort of your home.
