(Washington D.C.) President Trump announced Friday from the Oval Office a peace deal between Israel and Bahrain, the island nation in the Persian Gulf.

The agreement establishes full diplomatic relations between the two countries, a move that typically includes the use of embassies, increased trade and travel and closer international cooperation.

The two countries and the U.S. released a joint statement on the agreement.

The statement read, "This is a historic breakthrough to further peace in the Middle East. Opening direct dialogue and ties between these two dynamic societies and advanced economies will continue the positive transformation of the Middle East and increase stability, security, and prosperity in the region."

The deal follows a similar agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates on Aug. 13, which the statement specifically commended. That deal will be signed on Sept. 15 at the White House with Trump and the leaders of the two countries.

According to The New York Times, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor, Jared Kushner, largely brokered the Bahrain deal.

The deal makes Bahrain the fourth Arab country to reach such an agreement with Israel after Egypt, Jordan and the UAE.
