And when it comes time to set up your new TV, the optimal distance can make your viewing experience a lot more enjoyable. “As a rule of thumb,” Couling says, “images will start to lose detail if the distance between your couch and TV is greater than three times your TV’s vertical picture height.”

If you want to get the most out of your TV’s built-in speakers, Couling explains you’ll want to “make sure your TV is placed or mounted above a table, as most new TVs have downward-facing speakers placed behind the panel.” For using a soundbar, meantime, Couling advises mounting it or setting it “on the edge of your entertainment center instead of sitting flush with the wall.”
