What to Consider
While we enjoy using all types of bamboo bedding products, it’s unfortunate that their brands’ marketing claims can sometimes be a little misleading. What is widely called “bamboo” is technically rayon, which is derived from plant cellulose and used to make a variety of materials like viscose and modal. Good Housekeeping reports that to make bamboo sheets, the raw plant material is turned to pulp and chemically dissolved, removing any trace of the original plant matter in order to turn it into fiber. So, to call these sheets “plant-based” is really a stretch.
Also: While some bamboo sheet manufacturers make antibacterial claims about the material, it's been found in scientific testing not to be the case. While they do feel breathable and really nice against the skin, bamboo sheets need to be washed just as often as any other type.
The good news is, brand claims aside, these types of sheets are just really lovely to sleep with. Modal, viscose, and lyocell are durable, soft, and at once both cooling and cozy — there's a reason why reviewers are nuts about them. Keep in mind that these fabrics on their own aren't stretchy, so you'll want to keep an eye out for elastane or spandex in the sheets' material if you want that flexibility.
