AUSTIN (KXAN) — Monday is the 54th Anniversary of Earth Day. The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. It was a day where an estimated 20,000,000 people participated across the world. It happened because of an oil spill in 1969 off the coast of Santa Barbara. It’s “founder”? Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Anton Nelson.

Austin’s Earth Day festivities were postponed until Saturday due to rain this past weekend. Plan now to attend on the Huston-Tillotson Campus.

Monday was a beautiful day across Central Texas with low humidity and pleasant afternoon temperatures in the 70s.

High pressure is over southern Louisiana bringing southerly winds back to Central Texas. Humidity and temperatures will be on the increase as a result.

Enjoying the dry air before humidity returns

Breezy south winds will gust into the 20s or higher for much of the second half of the week.

Tuesday will be another dry day with those warmer temperatures.

An upper trough nears the area Friday increasing the chances of showers and thunderstorms. Low rain chances are popping in the Saturday and Sunday forecasts too, but don’t change your outdoor plans just yet.

After below-normal highs today and tomorrow, 80s will return Wednesday lasting into the weekend.

Highs above normal starting Wednesday
