Two teenagers were arrested and charged with armed carjacking in Washington , D.C.

Two juvenile males, both 13, were arrested on Saturday and charged with two counts of armed carjacking with a gun, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. One of the minors is from the District, and the other is from Brandywine, Maryland.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on Friday, the pair approached the victim, who was seated in the driver's side seat of the vehicle in the 300 block of K Street Northwest, according to authorities. One suspect produced a handgun and instructed the victim to exit the vehicle, and after the victim complied, the suspects attempted to take off in the vehicle, authorities continued. When that attempt failed, the teenagers allegedly fled on foot.

At approximately 8:40 p.m, the victim was seated in the driver's seat in the 400 block of O Street Northwest, police said. Again, two suspects approached, one of whom, gun in hand, instructed the victim to exit the vehicle. The victim complied, and the suspects fled the scene in the vehicle, which has since been recovered, police said.

The carjacking follows a similar incident that occurred on Tuesday, when two girls, aged 13 and 15, attempted to carjack Mohammad Anwar, a 66-year-old Uber Eats driver who was originally from Pakistan, according to police. Anwar fled, flipped his car, and ejected from his seat onto the sidewalk, after which he died at the hospital. The police said a Taser was involved in the incident, and both females were charged with felony murder and armed carjacking.

The mayor of Washington, Muriel Bowser, was criticized for her " deafening" silence " after Anwar's death. Without mentioning Anwar specifically, Bowser sent a tweet on Sunday that included a video on how to prevent auto thefts.

"Auto theft is a crime of opportunity. Follow these steps to reduce the risk of your vehicle becoming a target. Remember the motto, #ProtectYourAuto," she wrote.
