Monday tornados confirmed around WNY

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The National Weather Service confirmed two tornados touched down around Western New York Monday, one in Grand Island and one in the Town of Pembroke.

An EF-0 tornado with estimated peak wind speeds at 85 mph traveled through Grand Island from 4:33 p.m. to 4:36 p.m, according to the NWS. It began as a tornadic waterspout before coming on land near West River Road and Third Avenue.

The most significant damage was a couple of uprooted trees along First Street and Second Avenue as it continued southeast. The damage then trailed off as it neared the White Haven Road cemetery.

The tornado traveled for 1.2 miles with a path width of 75 yards.

Almost exactly four hours later, a second EF-0 tornado touched down in Pembroke. The tornado lasted for two minutes with winds of up to 75 mph. At 8:32 p.m., the tornado touched down along Route 77 near the hamlet of Indian Falls, producing tree damage at three residences.

Several trees were uprooted and several more had large limbs blown down. However, they were all found to have significant trunk rot.

The tornado continued east towards Little Falls Road before tapering off at 8:34 p.m.

No fatalities or injuries were reported from either tornado.

New York State has now hit a new record of 31 tornados in 2024.
