NYPD: Bronx man arrested, charged with first-degree rape

A 38-year-old Bronx man was charged with first-degree rape – accused of assaulting a woman near Bergen Avenue and East 149th Street earlier this month. The initial NYPD report says the victim was walking around 1 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 5 when she was approached by the suspect , now identified as Papa Diop, who asked for directions. She was then “forcibly raped.” The suspect fled on foot, the NYPD said. The victim was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in stable condition. Sources say a police officer recognized him from flyers around the borough and apprehended him on the 4 train this morning.
