WELD – What really happened on Malaga Island? Find out at the Weld Public Library on Thursday, June 27 at 6 p.m. The Weld Public Library and Book Club is pleased to host an evening of refreshments and lively discussion featuring Kate McBrien, Maine State Archivist, who will be making a special visit to Weld to explore the true history of the community who lived on Malaga Island, off the coast of Phippsburg, Maine, in the late 1800s. The program examines the individuals who were part of this community and the state’s actions to evict them from their homes through the complex history of racism and eugenics in Maine.

More than 30 cars have entered the UARA National Money in the Bank presented by Baker Auto Group at Berlin Raceway, scheduled for Wednesday, June 12. Among those entries are two NASCAR Cup Series competitors, Erik Jones and Carson Hocevar. Jones won last year’s Money in the Bank 150, adding to his list of accomplishments at Berlin which include a pair of wins at the Battle of Berlin and an ARCA Menards Series victory.
Lupine Festival returns to Rangeley region, June 15
RANGELEY – On Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Outdoor Heritage Museum in Oquossoc will once again host the popular Lupine Festival in celebration of the striking lupine flower that carpets the Rangeley Region in June. This festival event will feature over 35 vendors of arts, crafts, and antiques on the grounds of the Museum at 8 Rumford Road in Oquossoc. Attendees can browse and shop for unique gifts and Maine-made wares during the event. They can also visit the Outdoor Heritage Museum’s new 2024 exhibits, which will be open during the festival. The Museum Gift Shop will have native lupine seeds and lupine t-shirts available for sale. All proceeds from museum admissions, gift shop sales, and vendor fees benefit the Rangeley Lakes Region Historical Society, which works to preserve and share the region’s rich history.
Missing Maine man was shot, placed in a barrel and left at a sand pit, police say
PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine man whose body was found after a monthslong search had been killed, placed into a barrel, and dumped in a sand pit, authorities in the state said. The body of Alex Jackson, 34, of Windham, was recovered in the area of Stark, New Hampshire, last month after a search that took nearly a year. Police arrested Joseph Chute of Leeds and charged him with murder stemming from Jackson's death.
