“Szabo’s” may be a hard name to pronounce, but it’s not a hard place to fall in love with for their fresh seafood, perfectly-grilled steaks, and super friendly service. The owner, Mark Szabo, is originally from New Jersey but found himself on the Oregon coast in the early 2000s to be closer to his wife’s family. He’s owned and run the restaurant since 2002 after having spent years working in the industry. And, every day since then he’s made the people of Newport and tourists alike feel like family anytime they walk through the doors.

WALDPORT — A tiny Waldport shop is ready to satisfy big cravings for sweets, thanks to a local couple’s new venture. “JillyBeanz” is the name of the cozy, bright blue store scheduled to open Friday in the former home of Mark’s Caramel popcorn, right next to Fresh Mexican restaurant on U.S. Highway 101. With its menu of “ice cream, sweets and cozy treats,” the 277-square-foot shop will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily except Wednesdays.

Art in the Spotlight
Local artists Catherine Hingson and Sarah Hawklin are sharing a Spotlight Show running through Sept. 29 at Newport’s Yaquina Art Association Gallery. Sarah Hawklin’s art journey began very early, with the opportunity to investigate many techniques under the tutelage of Israeli artist Sahara Sandow. Ultimately, this type of learning helped to develop an eye for creativity and the confidence to try new experiences.
Easel-y does it this fall
Throughout the fall, the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts is offering one-day, two-day and multi-week visual arts classes at the Newport Performing Arts Center. First, on Tuesday, Sept. 26, adults 21 and over are invited to register for a “Stencils and Masks” workshop led by Wendy Schwartz, as part of the Passport to Art hands-on, introductory learning series. In this one-night-only workshop, participants will learn multiple techniques to create stencils and masks, then experiment using them on gel plates. The cost is $45, and materials and refreshments are included.
