    Thousands lost power as storms rolled through Hampton Roads

    PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Thousands of Dominion Power customers were in the dark at one point Friday evening after severe storms rolled through the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula.

    “Due to storms in the region, about 28,000 customers lost power in Williamsburg, the Peninsula, Suffolk & northeastern North Carolina,” Charise Newsome posted on X. “@DominionEnergy crews have restored about 10,500 so far. Crews won’t stop until all the lights are back on.”

    As of 1:30 a.m. Saturday, there were still just over 5,000 Dominion customers without power in southeastern Virginia, with most of those in Hampton (1,555), Newport News (1,254) and York County (1,686). On the Middle Peninsula, there were still just over 1,600 Dominion customers without power, most of them in Gloucester County (1,428).

    There were numerous reports of trees and wires down, and multiple reports of crashes in James City County, according to PulsePoint. There were also reports of wires down in Hampton, and trees and wires down in Newport News, and several reports of crashes in York County.

    This was the breakdown of Dominion customers without power on the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula as of 10 p.m., not long after the storms had passed through the region.

    • Newport News — 3,270 (6,321 at 9 p.m.)
    • James City County — 4,853 (5,522 at 9 p.m.)
    • Matthews — 4,107 (5,443 at 9 p.m.)
    • York County — 4,630 (4,613 at 9 p.m.)
    • Gloucester County — 3,674 (3,602 at 9 p.m.)
    • Isle of Wight County — 2,742 (3,241 at 9 p.m.)
    • Hampton — 3,197 (1,367 at 9 p.m.)
    • Williamsburg — 1,073 (909 at 9 p.m.)
    • Poquoson — 197 (197 at 9 p.m.)

    Strong thunderstorms rolled through parts of the Peninsula earlier Friday evening, bringing with it wind gusts in some areas of more than 50 mph, and the Historic Triangle and surrounding Peninsula areas were under a severe thunderstorm warning earlier Friday evening.

    The Virginia Department of Transportation said drivers faced delays on Interstate 64 due to weather at mile marker 239.9 in York County, with the east center lane, right lane and right shoulder closed. It said backups are about two miles as of 9:09 p.m.

    There was no immediate word on the extent of any damages in the region resulting from the storm.
