Electra deals with construction boom for data center, solar farms
The small town of Electra in western Wichita County is dealing with an unprecedented growth spurt because of the data center buildout and accompanying solar farms and temporary workers’ housing. Electra City Manager Joey Hodgkins said the City Council recently turned down a request from Hays Electric to spend $341,000 to construct an 8-inch water line from a ground storage tank on Midway Church Road to the company’s workers' housing sites on Gun Club Road east of Electra. Hodgkins said Hays has since informed him it will build the line at its own expense, expected to total $464,600. He said the Houston-based company has changed the number of temporary homes in the location several times. “I’ve heard anywhere from 50 to 200, so who knows?” he said. Hodgkins said the company intended to use up to 10,000 gallons of water per day. He said that would not hurt his city’s water supply. “We didn’t oppose the water line. We just opposed the city’s financial participation,” Hodgkins said. The Wichita County Commissioners Court on Tuesday voted on name designations for some rural roads near the housing site to accommodate emergency vehicles if they’re needed.
