Police say that two people were shot after a prom party in Newburgh on Saturday.
Saturday’s gunfire was heard on surveillance video that shows frightened teens running for safety.
The scene unfolded well after midnight in the City of Newburgh after a prom party that News 12 has now learned was hosted by Town of Wallkill Police Lt. Robert McLymore, who’s also running for City Council.
Neighbors say the prom party turned to mayhem when they heard multiple shots and kids screaming.
“There were like 15 kids running out of someone’s house literally just a couple feet down the road. It’s sad to see and terrible that we can’t enjoy a simple Friday night,” said Michael Casanova.
McLymore released a statement on Facebook that he later took down, saying the unfortunate incident happened after his son’s graduation from Newburgh Free Academy’s P-TECH program.
He said the suspects weren’t guests at the party.
“Our P-tech graduates, athletes and friends should have a right to enjoy their lives and have celebrations for their accomplishments without being threatened with violence,” said McLymore. “Fighting against gun violence and all the senseless incidents of violence is one of the reasons why I’m running for office.”
City of Newburgh Police say the two people who were injured in the shooting are expected to be OK.
Authorities say a female victim was also stabbed in the arm nearby minutes later.
It’s unclear if the incidents are connected, and police have not released any additional information.
“I don’t know if there’s going to be any resolving this,” said Rich Gilmore. “Street people are pretty silent.”
