One week later, on May 14, hockey fans continue to speculate which candidate will lead New Jersey into the 2024-25 season.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman recently reported on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast that former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe has a "legit chance if he wants" the head coaching gig in New Jersey.

"There was a time I thought that Berube was going to have an offer to coach the Devils. I'm not as certain about that now," he said on 32 Thoughts. "Still may happen, but I'm not as certain. As I've said, the Devils, I believe, were serious about Berube, and they were serious about Woodcroft."
"I am under the impression that Todd McLellan was going to get another interview with them, but I had some people saying to me this weekend that they think that Sheldon Keefe is a big factor in this job and that Keefe has a legit chance at this if he wants it."
On The Jeff Marek Show, Friedman said some people told him Monday morning (May 13) that New Jersey was leaning towards Woodcroft.
"It was Berube, it was Woodcroft. I know McLellan interviewed there, and Keefe became a factor on the weekend," Friedman said . "This morning, I had some people saying they were leaning Woodcroft. It is obviously that group of people, but New Jersey's got people leaning in a bunch of different directions. I did hear some pro-Woodcroft voices this morning that thought he also had a very legit chance at it. We will see where they go."
It seems that President/General Manager Tom Fitzgerald will make an announcement sooner rather than later, and it will most likely come ahead of his initial self-imposed deadline of the 2024 NHL Draft.
