Early Saturday morning, Team Canada announced its captains for the IIHF Men's World Championship. Unsurprisingly, their captain will be Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares. The alternates include Andrew Mangiapane of the Calgary Flames, Colton Parayko of the St. Louis Blues, and former New Jersey Devils defenseman Damon Severson .

The blueliner concluded his first season with the Columbus Blue Jackets after being traded from New Jersey on June 9, 2023, for a 3rd-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. The Devils later used that pick as part of the package to acquire Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames.

Severson concluded the 2023-24 season with 28 points (nine goals, 19 assists) in 67 games. He averaged a little over 21 minutes, an improvement from the season prior with New Jersey (19:57).

In Canada's game on May 11, Severson was paired with Kaiden Guhle of the Montreal Canadiens.

Severson has reunited with former Devils teammates Dawson Mercer and Nico Daws . The young, versatile forward played on Team Canada's top line with Jack McBain and Brandon Tanev while the netminder served as Joel Hofer's backup.
