New holidays
The desire to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks with a federal holiday is valiant, but flawed ( “Federal holiday push,” Sept. 8).
When the wounds of 9/11 were fresh, the concept of a holiday was dismissed, as it could eventually become diminished and commercialized as a sale day like Memorial Day.
Another worry was that a federal holiday could become a day of celebration, not for us to honor the fallen, but for our enemies to celebrate their victory and our failure to stop them.
After 9/11 came calls to “never forget,” yet we have forgotten.
The recent protests on college campuses foreshadows the potential celebrations of these similar atrocities on our own streets.
A solemn and vigilant remembrance — such as we do for Pearl Harbor — is most appropriate.

Trump-backing Pa. teen, 13, who shot viral video of Biden in MAGA hat, met both presidents minutes apart: ‘Once-in-a-lifetime’
Miami vice
The body-cam video posted online with the story about Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill’s encounter with police was revealing ( “ ‘I could have been better,’ ” Sept. 12).
It’s obvious from the video that Hill was surprised that the officers pulling him over for driving recklessly and speeding failed to treat him as a special case, even though he is a professional athlete.
The same goes for his obnoxious teammate Calais Campbell, who ignored an officer’s command to move his SUV, which was illegally stopped on the busy roadway.
These were cops acting like real cops, not taking any guff.
How utterly refreshing.

Eyes on Merchan
Rep. Elise Stefanik is one proactive congresswoman and should be applauded for her continuous work on behalf of former President Donald Trump ( “New Rep. Stef slap at judge,” Sept. 7).
Her research into Judge Juan Merchan has made everyone aware of his conflict of interest.
Biden jokes with Trump supporter that he doesn’t remember his own name at Pa. fire station: ‘You’re an old fart’
This is one hard-working Republican, who is doing her very best to secure Trump victory in November.
If only the rest of the House GOP would follow suit, we all could be united in the remaining two months.

Traffic nightmare
“Morning snag bummer NJ commuters” makes the case for consideration of extending the No. 7 subway line beyond the Hudson Yards Station, across the river to New Jersey Transit’s Secaucus Junction station, instead of the $39 billion full build Gateway Tunnel (Sept. 11).
Imagine providing a direct connection linking New Jersey, Penn Station, Grand Central and more under a one-seat ride for $2.75.
This could assist getting thousands of commuters to colleges, entertainment and shopping.
Thousands of New Jersey residents would have easier access to Manhattan’s East Side.

Metro North Rail Road commuters via Grand Central Terminal and Long Island Rail Road riders via Central Madison would have a new option traveling to and from New Jersey.
Riders and taxpayers from both states would benefit.

Crooked Cuomo
Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s recent testimony shows why politicians are not to be trusted ( “Same old lies – & now we’ve got the proof,” Sept. 11).
He blamed Trump for his COVID failures in office.
Someone please roll the tape when Cuomo was praising Trump for the president’s leadership.
This is why Cuomo is so disliked.
